This course runs on a Thursday evening from 6.00pm to 9.00pm for 12 weeks. These times include a period for shut down procedures at the end of the night.

Overview

This course is designed for people who have no previous experience of counselling but who want to develop skills that will help them in life and work. 

Candidates are introduced to counselling theory and have opportunities to develop their knowledge, skills and confidence through group discussion, role play and other activities. This course starts in September and runs on a Thursday evening from 6pm to 9pm for 12 weeks. These times include a period for shut down procedures at the end of the night.

You should have demonstrable values relevant to the course, including compassion, dignity, care and diligence. 

There are no formal academic requirements but you should not currently or while attending  the course be in receipt of counselling support.

you must demonstrate:

  • ability to study at level 5 through attained qualifications and / or suitable written activity at interview
  • values relevant to the course of study inclusive of compassion, dignity, care and diligence

Course Content

Candidates are introduced to counselling and have opportunities to develop their knowledge, skills and confidence through group discussion, other activities and role play.

The course will cover the following areas:

  • Communication skills
  • Aims of Counselling
  • Approaches to Counselling
  • Non-directive Counselling
  • Concepts of Counselling
  • Basic Counselling skills
  • Giving and receiving feedback

Careers and Further Study

This course provides basic knowledge and skills that can enhance your relationships and effectiveness in life and work. It does not permit you to refer to yourself as a qualified counsellor. Learners who want to expand their knowledge and skills further can apply and progress onto the Counselling Theory for Practice (Level 6) evening class, that typically runs from January to June. Full time Health and Social Care courses at Level 5 or 6 , such as Health and Social Care 5: Developing Knowledge and Skills or First Steps to Counselling and Mental Health may be attractive to you. HNC Counselling or COSCA Certificate in Counselling, at levels 7 and 8 may be your ultimate goal.
