Nearly 100 school pupils from across Ayrshire explored careers in hair, beauty and barbering when they attended Ayrshire College’s annual Beyond the Surface event at the Kilmarnock Campus.

Delivered in partnership with Developing the Young Workforce (DYW), the popular event welcomed 96 pupils for a hands-on introduction to the creative industries. It also gave them the opportunity to experience college life first-hand.

Throughout the morning, pupils took part in interactive workshops led by Ayrshire College lecturers and supported by current students. Activities included styling hair on model heads, designing nail art, learning barbering techniques and creating special effects makeup – giving pupils a taste of the practical skills used in the industry.

The event highlighted the wide range of career pathways available within the sector, including opportunities for entrepreneurship and self-employment.

Pupils also heard from Jane Masson of GrowBiz, who delivered an inspiring session on entrepreneurial skills. Her presentation encouraged pupils to think creatively about how their talents and interests could develop into future careers or business opportunities.

Angela Sheridan said:

“Beyond the Surface is always a highlight in our calendar. It’s fantastic to welcome so many enthusiastic young people onto campus and give them a real taste of college life.

“Events like this help pupils see the wide range of creative and rewarding careers available within hair, beauty and complementary therapies, while also encouraging them to think about how their creativity and skills could shape their future.”

The event forms part of Ayrshire College’s ongoing work with schools and industry partners to inspire young people and support the development of future talent across the region.
