South Scotland MSP Brian Whittle visited a Forest Kindergarten session delivered by Higher National students this week, joining parents, children, and community members who regularly take part in the College’s outdoor play activities.
The session showcased the Forest Kindergarten model, an approach centred on learning and play in nature, where students design and lead child-focused activities using natural materials and the outdoor environment. This hands-on experience allows students to put classroom theory into practice, developing their skills in outdoor learning, early years practice, and child development.
For families, the sessions offer a free, welcoming, and inclusive space to enjoy time outdoors with their children. Parents gain insight into the value of nature-based play while building confidence and strengthening connections within their local community.
Mr Whittle, who has long championed health, wellbeing, and outdoor activity, was keen to see firsthand the impact of this community provision. He was joined by John McTaggart, Curriculum Quality Manager, Sports & Fitness and Hospitality, who was invited by Mr Whittle to learn more about the College’s wider community initiatives, including Mental Health United, Connecting Communities, and partnerships with Kris Boyd, Only Sport, and other prominent sporting figures. These initiatives collectively support improved wellbeing, strengthen community cohesion, and offer accessible pathways into physical activity and support services.
Brian Whittle MSP said:
It was fantastic to see the Forest Kindergarten programme in action and to witness the enthusiasm of both the students leading the session and the families taking part. Outdoor learning has such a powerful impact on children’s development, confidence, and wellbeing, and it is clear that the College is playing a vital role in making these opportunities accessible to the community. The wider work taking place, particularly around mental health, physical activity, and community connection is hugely impressive and something I am proud to support.
Sara Rae, Vice Principal, Skills and Enterprise, commented:
We are delighted to welcome Brian Whittle MSP to our Forest Kindergarten session and to showcase the meaningful work our students deliver in partnership with local families. Our broader initiatives, from Mental Health United to our collaborations with key sporting partners reflect our commitment to supporting healthier, more connected communities across the region.
