Ayrshire College has demonstrated its leadership in student support through its contribution to the Student Carer Conference hosted by Carers Trust Scotland on Thursday 19th March 2026 at Queen Margaret University in Musselburgh.

The national event brought together professionals from further and higher education, student carers, local carer organisations, and key decision-makers, all with a shared goal: to strengthen and improve the support available to student carers across Scotland.

As part of the programme, Ayrshire College was invited to deliver a 45-minute breakout session titled “Best Practice Supporting Student Carers in Ayrshire College – Ayrshire College and Student Carer.” The session showcased the College’s proactive and student-centred approach, highlighting what works well, the challenges faced, and practical recommendations for other institutions looking to enhance their own support systems.

The session was delivered by Doreen Wales, Assistant Principal for Student Experience and Quality Enhancement; Teri Evans, Engagement and Wellbeing Team Leader; and Lauren Middleton, a student carer currently studying HNC Childhood Practice at our Kilwinning Campus. Together, they provided a powerful blend of professional insight and lived experience, giving attendees a comprehensive understanding of how Ayrshire College supports its student carers.

Lauren’s contribution brought authenticity and depth to the discussion, illustrating how the College’s policies and practices translate into real, meaningful support for students balancing education with caring responsibilities.

The session was met with overwhelmingly positive feedback, with many delegates praising the College’s inclusive approach and practical strategies. Since the conference, two other colleges have already reached out to Ayrshire College to learn more about its policies and practices, underlining the wider impact of the session.

Heidi Teague, Programme Officer (Education) at Carers Trust Scotland, commended the team’s contribution, stating:

We've had lots of wonderful comments and feedback about your session – delegates were impressed by your approach to student carers and I think you may get a number wishing to bend your ear on how they can replicate it in their own institutions.

Reflecting on the experience, Teri Evans said:

It was a fantastic opportunity to share the work we’re doing at Ayrshire College and to hear from others across the sector. Supporting student carers is about understanding individual circumstances and creating flexible, compassionate systems that allow students to succeed. We’re proud of what we’ve achieved, but we’re always learning and evolving.

Ayrshire College’s involvement in the conference not only highlighted its commitment to equity and inclusion but also positioned it as a leading voice in shaping best practice for supporting student carers across Scotland.
